Trafoi, a mountain village in the Ortler range of the Tyrol, is the setting here, and the print shows its hotel and post station, a stop where travelers changed horses and rested on the road up toward the Stelvio Pass. This photochrom was made by the Photochrom process, a method of hand-colored lithographic reproduction that the Detroit Publishing Company used to produce its tinted views of Europe and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Such prints, sold to tourists and collectors around 1890 to 1900, offer a glimpse of Alpine inns when coaching was still a common way to cross the mountains.
