Hotel Rosa stands in the Great Kohlbach valley (Kohlbacherthal) in the Tatra Mountains, a range that then lay within the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now split between Slovakia and Poland. Its color comes from the photochrom process, in which a black-and-white negative was transferred to stone and hand-colored, giving the print its soft, painted look. The Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views to American and European travelers, and this one is listed in its 1905 catalog, print no. 16440, under the series *Views of the Austro-Hungarian Empire*. Mountain hotels like this one catered to the growing number of visitors who came to the Tatras in the late 1800s for hiking and clean air.
