The Schneeberg, the highest peak in Lower Austria, drew walkers and holidaymakers, and this photochrom shows the hotel that served them. Photochrom prints like this one were made by a Swiss process that built up several color stones over a photograph, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views in the United States through its catalogues of European scenes. Made in the 1890s, the picture captures a mountain resort that was growing as visitors arrived by road and, later, by rack railway. Its catalog number, 16677, places it within the company's larger series on the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
