Perched near the summit of the Schafberg above Lake St. Wolfgang in Upper Austria, the Hotel Schafberg drew visitors who came up by rack railway for the view across the Salzkammergut lakes. The hotel was built in the 1890s, soon after the mountain railway opened, and its dining room and terrace made it a destination in their own right. This photochrom was produced by a Swiss process that applied color from a series of stone plates, and Detroit Publishing Company sold it as part of its catalog of Austro-Hungarian views. Its record dates it only to the years between about 1890 and 1900, so the exact year it was taken is uncertain.
