Few hotels in Central Europe carried the reputation of the Grand Hotel Pupp in Karlsbad, the spa town in Bohemia whose mineral springs drew visitors from across the Habsburg lands and beyond. The resort trade flourished there through the later 19th century, and grand hotels like this one were central to its social life. This color view comes from a series of photochrom prints issued by the Detroit Publishing Co., which sold color reproductions of European scenes to American buyers. The process gives the street and building a soft, painted quality that was prized at the time.
