Abbazia, now Opatija, was a fashionable seaside resort on the Kvarner Gulf of Istria, and this view centers on the Hotel Quarnero and its bathing facilities. The resort grew up in the later 19th century as wealthy Viennese and other European visitors came to the Adriatic coast for sea air and mild winters. The photochrom process used here, which printed a photograph in color from a set of hand-prepared lithographic stones, was a Swiss invention that the Detroit Publishing Company later produced in the United States. Its bright, almost painted color makes the resort look like the leisure destination it was meant to be.
