Set in the High Tatras, the mountain range on what is now the border between Slovakia and Poland, the Hotel Gemse was one of the lodgings that drew visitors to the region as it developed into a resort in the late 1800s. This print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that combined photographs with hand-applied color printed from lithographic stones. It appeared in the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of views of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and its date is estimated at roughly 1890 to 1900. The saturated color was meant to make a distant mountain resort feel vivid to viewers at home.
