Few places in the empire were as closely tied to its railways as the Semmering pass, and this print shows the hotel built beside the line that climbs over it. The Semmering Railway opened in 1854, and its engineering, led by Carl von Ghega, made it one of the first lines to cross a high Alpine pass. Visitors from Vienna came up to the mountain resort to escape the city, so the hotel served travelers and holidaymakers alike. The photochrom process used here produced vivid color from a single photograph, which gives the scene its bright, postcard-like tones.
