Few town halls in Germany show as many centuries of building as the one in Cologne, pictured here under the title Hotel de Ville on the Rhine. Its Gothic tower, begun in the early 1400s, stands beside a Renaissance wing added in the late 1500s, and the contrast is visible in the stonework and the arcaded facade. The print was made by the photochrom process, a early color method that built up the image from several printing stones, and it was sold in America by the Detroit Publishing Company, which listed it in its 1905 catalog of German views.
