Misdroy, a Baltic seaside resort in Pomerania, is the setting here, with a hotel on the beach and the Kaffeeberg, a hillside café, both named in the title. The town is today Międzyzdroje in Poland, a change that followed the redrawing of borders after the Second World War. The print uses photochrom, a color process developed by a Swiss firm that was costly and labor-intensive, and it comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog of German views, issued around 1905. Its hotel and café setting connects it to the late-nineteenth-century rise of seaside tourism.
