Among the many Riviera views in this series, this one shows the Royal Hotel at San Remo on the Italian coast of Liguria, with its gardens laid out in front of the building. The print was made by the photochrom process, which combined photography with several inked color plates to give a painted quality, and the Detroit Publishing Company issued it as number 1225 in its 1905 catalog of French and Italian Riviera scenes. The record dates the original image only to somewhere between about 1890 and 1900, a period when many visitors from northern Europe and America spent their winters on this coast.
