Hotel Olimpo sits back from the road on the Military Road in San Juan, its façade largely hidden behind a garden of tropical trees and flowers, a detail that sets this card apart from many street views of the city. The stereograph dates to 1904, a few years after the United States took Puerto Rico from Spain in 1898, when American publishers were eager to show the island to viewers at home. Ox teams and carts moving along the road show the working transport of the period, which still ran alongside the growing American presence in the capital.
