The view centers on the Hotel du Lac in Lucerne, set on the lake with the rugged slopes of Mount Pilatus rising behind it. Like many Swiss views of the period, it was produced by the photochrom process, a costly method of printing color from photographs that Photoglob in Zürich used to make tourist souvenirs. Lucerne was a major stop for travelers in the 1890s, and the cog railway that opened to Pilatus's summit in 1889 drew many visitors who stayed at lakeside hotels like this one. The print shows how these hotels presented the Alpine landscape as part of the trip.
