Rising above Lake Lucerne on a wooded cliff, the Bürgenstock hotel drew travelers who wanted lake views and mountain air, and this print pairs the building with the water below. The picture is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that built up color from several lithographic stones, giving scenes like this one a soft, painted quality that made them popular with tourists and collectors. Detroit Publishing Company reproduced it and listed it as print number 6601 in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views. The record dates the image to somewhere between about 1890 and 1900.
