The hotel in this view stood in the Maderanertal, a side valley of the Swiss canton of Uri, and the record places it within reach of Lake Lucerne. Hotels like this one catered to the visitors who came to the Alps in the late 1800s to hike, climb, and take the mountain air. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Zürich in the 1890s that was prized for its painted look. Detroit Publishing Company later sold these hand-colored-looking views in America, and this copy comes from its 1905 catalog of Swiss scenes.
