Ouchy, the lakeside district of Lausanne, is the setting here, and the Hôtel Beau-Rivage stood on its waterfront as one of the grand hotels that drew travelers to the Swiss shore of Lake Geneva in the late nineteenth century. This photochrom print was made by a process developed in Switzerland, in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to a set of stone plates and printed in layered colors, giving the lake and hotel facade a painted softness. The Detroit Publishing Company issued the image in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views, which helped carry scenes like this to American buyers. The hotel's terrace and dining rooms were part of the hospitality that defined such resorts.
