Separate dining rooms for ladies and gentlemen, a saloon, and a dumb waiter running up to the roof are all labeled on this 1847 floor plan by Philadelphia architect John Haviland. The building at Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street began as the Fountain Inn, became the Irving Hotel in 1848, and was reworked as the Kirkwood House in 1854. Its guests in 1865 included George Atzerodt, one of the conspirators in Lincoln's assassination. The hotel was demolished in 1875.
