The gentlemen's and ladies' staircases labeled on this third-floor plan mark a Washington hotel at Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street NW, the Kirkwood House. The drawing bears the name of architect John Haviland of Philadelphia and the date 1847, and it was rendered in ink, watercolor and graphite. The building began as the Fountain Inn, became the Irving Hotel in 1848, and took the Kirkwood name in 1854. In April 1865, George Atzerodt stayed there while plotting against Vice President Andrew Johnson. The hotel was demolished in 1875.
