Seen from the base of the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon Place, this view looks north up Charles Street toward the Hotel Belvedere, whose name the record gives as "Belvidere." The monument, completed in 1829 and topped by a statue of Washington, gave photographers an elevated vantage over the city's most fashionable residential and hotel district. Between 1903 and 1910, when this print was likely made, Baltimore's hotels were central to its social and commercial life, and many, like the Belvedere, housed dining rooms and bars that drew both travelers and local gentlemen. The photograph captures the streetscape of that period, with its trolley lines, carriages and the dense row of masonry buildings.
