Few hotel plans show the working basement, and this one lists it room by room: oyster cellar, liquor and wine vaults, a bar, a larder, coal and fuel cellars, and a furnace room. The drawing is inked and watercolored and labeled with the architect's name, John Haviland of Philadelphia, and the date 1847. The building began as the Fountain Inn, became the Irving Hotel in 1848, and was renamed the Kirkwood House in 1854 under owner Azariah Fuller. The hotel stood at Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street NW until it was demolished in 1875. Its guests included Vice President Andrew Johnson, who was staying there in April 1865 when Lincoln was assassinated, and the plot against Johnson was linked to the hotel.
