Few hotel drawings on this board carry as much history as these elevations of the Kirkwood House, which show its Twelfth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue fronts in Washington. The building began as the Fountain Inn, became the Irving Hotel in 1848, and took the Kirkwood name in 1854, and the sheet labels an oyster cellar entrance at street level. The drawing is inscribed by John Haviland, the Philadelphia architect, and the hotel was demolished in 1875. Its most notable guest was Vice President Andrew Johnson, who stayed there in April 1865, the same month Lincoln was assassinated.
