Hotel Winston stood on the corner of First Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, close to the Capitol. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that recorded the city's streets and buildings in the early decades of the twentieth century, made this glass negative, a format it relied on for much of its work. The date is an estimate drawn from neighboring negatives, so the exact year is uncertain. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings and are worth noticing when you study the image.
