Taken from an upper floor of the New Washington Hotel, this 1929 view looks down over downtown Seattle, with its rooftops and commercial blocks spread across the frame. It dates from the last years of national Prohibition, which had banned the sale of alcohol across the country since 1920 and closed the saloons that had once lined the city's business streets. That context explains its place among the tavern and saloon images, since the drinking trade of the period moved into back rooms and speakeasies rather than open bars.
