The Capitol dome in this 1909 panorama rises over a city still shaping its monumental core, with the Mall and surrounding streets stretched across the frame. By 1909 the building had already been expanded several times since the British burned it in 1814, and the cast-iron dome, completed in 1866, was a landmark of the American republic. Panoramic views like this one were popular at the turn of the century, when photographers used wide-format cameras to record civic buildings in full. Look along the horizon to see how the skyline of the early twentieth-century capital compares with the city today.
