The Washington Monument, the 555-foot marble obelisk on the National Mall, is the subject here, and this view looks out over the city from its surroundings. Construction stalled for more than two decades after 1854 for lack of funds and was finished in 1884, with the monument dedicated in 1885. In 1912 the capital was still growing into the plan laid out by Pierre L'Enfant, and the Mall had not yet taken on the monuments and reflecting pool that came later. The picture shows how the obelisk stood as the city's tallest structure, a landmark that governed the skyline and the view for everyone in the district.
