Cedar Rapids, Iowa, takes its name from the rapids on the Cedar River, and by 1907 the city had become one of the state's busiest industrial centers, with mills drawing power from the water and railroads carrying goods out. The record gives only the city, the state and the year, so the scene is best read through that setting: a river town growing quickly in the early twentieth century, when Midwestern cities were expanding. The streets, buildings and riverfront details show how the community was laid out as it took shape.
