Cedar Rapids, the Linn County city on the Cedar River, is the place this 1914 view captures. By then it had grown into one of Iowa's busier manufacturing and milling centers, with the Quaker Oats plant among its best-known employers and the river shaping where industry and housing took hold. Photographs from this period often show the streetscapes, rail lines and brick commercial buildings of a fast-growing Midwestern town just before the First World War. Buildings, clothing and street details are the best clues to everyday life there.
