A wide, stitched-together view of Boise, Idaho, around 1909 captures a town that was still finding its footing as the state capital. By the first decade of the 1900s, Boise had grown into a regional hub for mining, agriculture and rail, and its downtown streets reflected that rapid growth. Panoramic photographs of this kind were popular then because they could show an entire block or skyline in a single sweep, giving viewers a sense of scale that a standard camera plate could not. Looking closely at the storefronts, wagons and pedestrians lets you read the everyday rhythms of a western city at the start of the twentieth century.
