Lined with royal palms, the avenue in this 1921 panoramic view shows the tall, straight trunks that gave Miami's streets their distinctive look in the years after Henry Flagler's railroad reached the city in 1896. The palm was a popular choice for planters and developers, who saw it as a sign of a subtropical town. By 1921, Miami was in the middle of a major land boom, and images like this one helped present the city as orderly, green, and ready for growth. The wide format shows how the trees framed the roadway and drew the eye down its length.
