The Royal Poinciana Hotel stood on the shore of Lake Worth in Palm Beach, and this 1912 view shows the resort at the height of its popularity. Henry Flagler, the Standard Oil partner who was building the Florida East Coast Railway, opened the hotel in 1894. It was among the largest wooden hotels in the world, and its long verandas and sprawling grounds drew wealthy winter guests from the North. The name came from the royal poinciana, a flame-red flowering tree common in the region. The hotel was torn down in 1934, so photographs like this one are now among the main records of its scale.
