This 1908 aerial-style view looks down on Portland, Oregon, where the Willamette River winds past the city toward its meeting with the Columbia. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the early twentieth century, when cities were growing fast and civic boosters wanted to show off their streets, rail lines and waterfront in a single sweeping picture. Portland had drawn national attention with the Lewis and Clark Exposition in 1905, and by 1908 it was among the Pacific Northwest's fastest-growing centers. The picture is worth studying for its layout of blocks, bridges and open land, which shows how the city was taking shape.
