Crater Lake in southern Oregon is the subject here, a deep blue caldera lake formed when Mount Mazama collapsed roughly 7,700 years ago. Photographs from 1911 date from the years just after the area was set aside as Crater Lake National Park in 1902, when visitors were still reaching the rim by stagecoach and rough road. The lake's unusually clear water and steep basalt walls drew early photographers, and images from this period helped build public interest in a park that was still новый to most Americans. Look closely at the lake's edge and the surrounding timber to get a sense of how wild the setting remained.
