Few lakes in the country sit as deep or as strikingly blue as Crater Lake, which fills the caldera left after Mount Mazama collapsed roughly 7,700 years ago. Congress set the area aside as a national park in 1902, and by 1912 it was still a remote destination, reached by long stagecoach and automobile routes over rough mountain roads. A 1912 view of the rim and water shows the park in its early years, when visitors were just beginning to come to see the lake's clear, deep water and the volcanic cliffs that surround it.
