Portland's Willamette River is the subject here, shown as a working waterfront in 1908, when the city was growing quickly on the strength of its river trade and rail connections. Riverfront views like this one capture the mix of docks, boats and commercial traffic that made the Willamette central to the city's early economy. The river also divided the east and west sides of town, and the bridges and levees that were being built or planned around this time reflected how much depended on moving goods and people across the water. Pictures from this period are useful for seeing how the shoreline looked before later industrial and rail expansion changed it.
