From the 11th Street Bridge, this 1908 view takes in Tacoma's industrial waterfront, where the bridge and the tideflats below make up the frame. The photograph dates from a period when Tacoma was growing fast as a Puget Sound port and a terminus of the Northern Pacific Railway, and shipping, lumber and rail traffic were reshaping the shoreline. Views like this one document how quickly commerce spread across the waterfront in the early twentieth century. The docks, track and water layout are worth studying as closely as the city beyond them.
