Mount Washington Hotel stood in Carroll, New Hampshire, in 1905, a few miles from the village of Bretton Woods in the White Mountains. The hotel opened in 1902 as a luxury resort, and it drew wealthy summer guests from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia who arrived by rail and spent their days on the verandas, the lawns, and the mountain trails. Its size and fine furnishings made it one of the most talked-about hotels in the region, and it stood as a sign of how the White Mountains had shifted from rugged scenery for hikers toward a destination for fashionable leisure. Carroll was a small, rural town, so the hotel brought outside money, jobs for local workers, and a steady stream of visitors into a community whose economy had long depended on farming, lumber, and the seasonal trade.
