Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1910 was a mill city built along the Merrimack River, where the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company ran some of the largest textile works in the country. Thousands of workers, many of them French Canadian immigrants alongside Irish, Greek, and Polish families, spent long days in the brick mills and lived in nearby tenements. The river's falls had powered the city's growth since the mid-1800s, and canals and rail lines carried cotton cloth to markets across the nation. Residents knew Manchester as the largest city in the state, and factory whistles set the daily rhythm of neighborhoods on both banks. Civic life revolved around parish churches, ethnic societies, and a city government shaped by the languages and faiths of its mill workforce.
