Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1921 was a mill city built around the Merrimack River, where the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company's textile works employed a large share of the workforce. Many residents were French Canadian, Irish, and more recent immigrants, and their neighborhoods clustered near the factories. Cigar making gave the city a second line of manufacturing, and the Sullivan factory was one of the workplaces where local people earned wages in the years after the First World War. Textile jobs were already becoming less secure, though few people then could foresee how sharply the mills would decline in the following decade.
