Sunapee Harbor, a lakeside village in Sullivan County, New Hampshire, looked out on Lake Sunapee in 1908, when the town's economy had shifted toward summer visitors. Hill farms that had struggled through the late nineteenth century were giving way to boarding houses, cottages, and rented rooms, and steamboats on the lake carried vacationers between landings. Residents of the surrounding towns still depended on dairying, woodlots, and seasonal work, and they knew the harbor as a place where the summer season brought cash and strangers into a quiet rural community. Like much of the state's interior, Sunapee was losing population to the mill cities and to the West even as its lake attracted people from Boston and farther south.
