Phillips Exeter Academy, the boarding school in Exeter, New Hampshire, was about 130 years old in 1903, having been founded in 1781 under a charter tied to the Phillips family and the Exeter community. By the turn of the century it had grown into one of the best-known preparatory schools in the country, drawing students from across New England and beyond. The town itself was a quiet mill and market community on the Squamscott River, where textile and shoe-related industry and the railroad shaped daily life alongside the school. Students, faculty and townspeople alike would have known Exeter as a place where academic reputation and the rhythms of the campus set the tone of the village.
