Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1903 was one of the largest textile manufacturing cities in the United States, built around the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company's sprawling mill complex along the Merrimack River. The Amoskeag works had been among the biggest cotton producers in the country for decades, employing thousands of workers, many of them French Canadian, Irish, and recent immigrants who lived in tenements and boardinghouses near the mills. Canal and rail lines fed raw cotton and coal into the yards and shipped finished cloth out, and the river's falls supplied the power that drove the looms. By the early 1900s, however, New England textile firms faced growing competition from southern mills, a tension that shaped the city's labor and civic life for years to come.
