This 1904 panoramic photograph by E. Chickering & Co. is catalogued as Earl of Dartmouth, New Hampshire, and the view most likely shows Hanover, the college town on the Connecticut River that shares its name with the Earl. Dartmouth College, chartered in 1769 and named for William Legge, the second Earl of Dartmouth, was the center of village life, and the local economy depended heavily on the college, its students, and the farms and small shops of the surrounding Upper Valley. In 1904 New Hampshire was still a state of hill farms, river mills, and timber and granite trade, and towns like Hanover were linked to the wider region by rail and river traffic. Residents would have known the place first as a college community, where campus buildings, the green, and church spires defined the skyline.
