Franconia, New Hampshire, in 1910 was a farming and summer-resort town in the Ammonoosuc River valley, on the edge of the White Mountains. Hill farms raised hay, dairy cattle, and sheep, and many families also tapped maples each spring and sold syrup and sugar. The bigger draw was the summer trade. Visitors arrived by the Boston & Maine line and the branch rail service into Franconia Notch, where the Profile House, a large hotel, drew guests who came to see the Old Man of the Mountain and the nearby Flume gorge. Local people knew the town as a stop on that tourist route, and its shops, boarding houses, and livery stables depended on the seasonal crowds.
