North Conway, New Hampshire, in 1910 sat at the northern end of the Saco River valley, where the railroad had reached the village in the 1870s and begun carrying summer visitors from Boston and southern New England. Farming, lumber, and small mills still shaped local work, but by the early twentieth century boarding houses and hotels had become the most visible business, and many families took in guests each season. The Saco had long powered mills along its banks, while Cathedral Ledge rising above the village drew hikers and artists who came to see the White Mountains. Town affairs were settled at the annual town meeting, as was customary across rural New Hampshire.
