In 1910, Haywood County in the mountains of western North Carolina was a place where timber, farming, and the growing pull of outside money were changing daily life. The Champion Fibre Company had opened its large paper mill at Canton on the Pigeon River only a couple of years earlier, bringing wage work and a new kind of industry to a region long dependent on logging and small farms. Railroad lines carried lumber and visitors into the valleys, and the cooler summers drew families from the lowland South to boarding houses and mountain retreats. This photograph of Eagle's Nest shows the landscape that residents of the county would have known, a place where the forest, the river, and the new mill town were all becoming part of one economy.
