Eagle's Nest, on Plott Creek in Haywood County, North Carolina, was a rural mountain setting in 1911, when the county's economy still rested mostly on farming, timber, and livestock. Families on the creek grew corn and apples on steep, cleared land and sold what they could in the county seat of Waynesville, which had been reachable by rail since the Western North Carolina Railroad arrived in the 1880s. The region was changing quickly that decade. Lumber companies were cutting the old forests, and the paper mill that the Champion Fibre Company was building in nearby Canton, starting in 1908, promised steady wage work for people who had long lived by subsistence and barter. Those who lived in the valley would have known Plott Creek mainly as a place of hard work, church gatherings, and close neighbors.
