In 1911, Canton, North Carolina, a mill town in Haywood County on the Pigeon River, was being remade by the Champion Fibre Company, whose paper and pulp plant had begun operating in the Pigeon River valley only a few years earlier. The company drew on the forests of the southern Appalachians for wood and on the river for the water its process required, so the mill quickly became the center of local work and the main reason people moved to the town. Residents would have measured the place by the plant's whistle and shifts, and by the housing, stores, and churches that grew up around it. The mill also brought outside managers, engineers, and laborers into a region that had been largely farming and small-scale timber work, and it altered the town's daily rhythms and its sense of itself.
