Waynesville, the seat of Haywood County in the Blue Ridge foothills of western North Carolina, was a small mountain town in 1911 that had grown up around the Southern Railway's line, which reached the area in the 1880s. Lumber, tanning, and farming supplied most local work, and the town's cooler summers drew visitors from lower-lying Southern cities who came to escape the heat and sometimes to rest for their health. Hotels like the Southern Assembly catered to that trade, offering long stays, dining rooms, and verandas where guests spent warm afternoons. Residents of the period would have known Waynesville as a rail stop and a gateway to the surrounding mountains, where the summer season set the town's rhythm.
