Lake Toxaway, in the mountains of Transylvania County, North Carolina, was a resort created in the early 1900s when a dam was built across the Toxaway River to form a large lake. In 1911 the Lake Toxaway Hotel stood at the center of this summer retreat, drawing well-to-do visitors from Southern cities who came to fish, rest, and escape the lowland heat. The surrounding county still depended mainly on farming and timber, so the resort offered a different kind of prosperity built on leisure and visitors' money. Guests reached the mountains by train to nearby towns and then by carriage or automobile over rough roads, which made the hotel feel remote and exclusive. The dam failure in 1916 would later end this resort era, but in 1911 local people knew the place as a fashionable mountain escape.
