Lake Toxaway, in Transylvania County in the Blue Ridge foothills of western North Carolina, was in 1913 a summer resort built around a man-made lake formed by damming the Toxaway River. Wealthy families from the Carolinas, Georgia, and farther north came up for the cool mountain air, staying at the large hotel on the shore and spending the season on boating, fishing, and social calls. Visitors reached the area by rail through nearby Brevard, and the resort's economy depended on those seasonal guests rather than on the mills and farms that surrounded it. Locals knew the place as a fashionable retreat that drew its prosperity from the summer trade, and its fortunes would change sharply when the dam later failed and drained the lake.
